All About Hair Toners

Products that are used to get the raw pigment on the colored hair is called hair toner. These can come in different types such as permanent and semi-permanent. The most used ones, however, is the demi-permanent and semi-permanent hair toners. These are used to enhance the existing color of the hair and are usually applied to the hair after dying to protect the hair from color damage.

The two step process is usually done in coloring dark hair with a lighter shade. This is necessary to get the expected result. The hairstylist first pre-lightens the hair and then colors the hair with a shade that is two shades lighter than your previous hair color. The hair toner is used on the second process wherein the stylist puts color on the pre-lightened hair to achieve the desired look.

In addition, other products are used to deposit colors, but are translucent and enhance the natural color variation of the hair. They are not really referred to as toners but are more known as translucent formulas that do the same job as hair toner does.

Other toners that allow one to do a little color shift is also available. These products are oftentimes used to add tint in the hair. Such can be used to add a shade of brown color to add an auburn tone to the hair. They can also be used to remove the brassy shade in blonde colored hair.

In using hair toner, add the toner to your hair in small sections. Start toning at the roots running your fingers down the hair and covering it completely. Cover the untouched hair by running your fingers on your entire head. Let it stay in the hair for few minutes, according to box instructions. After that, rinse the hair with cool water and apply mild shampoo to remove any chemicals.

The two step process is not recommended to do on your own for a stylist can help in achieving the best result.
